Founded on August 1, 1987, Goa College of Music is a government institution affiliated with Goa University. We offer specialized programs in Hindustani Classical Music, with a focus on both vocal and instrumental training. Our courses are designed to provide comprehensive education, developing students’ musical talents to a professional standard.
Our teaching methods combine traditional and modern practices to provide a well-rounded education. The training process includes:
Practical Training in Music :
Students receive personalized instruction in ragas, focusing on the proper application of voice, tunefulness, and mastery of rhythm. Instrumental students are trained in proper technique, playing various ragas and talas to develop technical proficiency and musical expression.
Theoretical Training :
Students learn the theoretical aspects of ragas, including their structure, application, and comparative study of similar ragas. Additional theoretical subjects such as Aesthetics, Musicology, and Voice Culture complement practical learning.
Workshops and Guest Lectures:
We regularly invite visiting professors, renowned artists, and scholars to conduct workshops and masterclasses. These sessions provide students with advanced insights into different aspects of musicology and performance.
Exposure to Live Performances :
Students are encouraged to attend live concerts, as well as engage with recorded performances (LPs, CDs, cassettes), to gain exposure to different musical styles, interpretations, and performances.
Regular Performance Opportunities :
To enhance performing skills, students participate in weekly college programs and performances at educational and cultural institutions. These regular opportunities help students gain practical experience and confidence in live settings.
Inter-Institutional Exchange :
As part of our commitment to broadening students’ musical horizons, we facilitate participation in music programs at reputed institutions outside the state through the Inter-University/College Music Exchange Scheme.
Research Centre :
In addition to its educational programs, Goa College of Music also houses a Research Centre dedicated to the study and documentation of Hindustani Classical Music. The research center is focused on advancing knowledge in musicology, ethnomusicology, and other related fields. It serves as a hub for scholarly research, providing students and faculty with opportunities to engage in in-depth studies, research projects, and publications that contribute to the preservation and evolution of Indian musical traditions.
The research centre encourages critical thinking and innovation, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern perspectives. It also serves as a resource for aspiring researchers, offering access to an extensive library, archives, and materials related to music history, theory, and practice
